In this Robert Richmond adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Propsero and Caliban are played by the same performer, the incredible Richard Willis, who brings forth the indigenous spirit from within his body with transformative physicality.
Miranda and Ariel are also played by the same performer, child actress Stevie Kesse.
The costumes are constructed of sail cloth to evoke the shipwreck that stranded them on the island 14 years prior, and they are designed to accommodate the actors’ transformations.
Mud mask and black makeup assist Richard in depicting dual characterization: the magician and the moon calf.
The clip above (02:30) shows the first and most emphatic transformation from Prospero to Caliban supported by lighting and sound. The image below shows the physiognomy of Caliban.
